The Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) has meted out harsh penalties to a top team after a quarter-final play-off was marred by fan trouble. The CBA blamed the head coach of Ningbo Bayi Shuanglu and their manager for inciting unrest among home fans after their side lost to Liaoning. It fined the club 20,000 yuan and the coach and manager 10,000 yuan each. Riot police had to be deployed to protect the visitor's coach after angry Bayi fans tried to prevent him from leaving the venue. Earlier this month, China's stars said they were playing in fear of their safety because of growing hooliganism among fans.
