A French exchange student found dead at City University less than 24 hours after arriving in Hong Kong had accidentally fallen from the roof of a hostel at the Kowloon Tong campus, police said yesterday. Investigators said they had no idea how Vincent Godignon, 21, came to fall, but he left no note and there were no signs that it was suicide. Godignon's body was found on the first-floor podium of the Cornwall Street hostel complex's 18-storey Jockey Club Humanity Hall 1 at 8.40pm on Monday. He was to have lived on the ninth floor. 'We believe it was an accident,' a police spokesman said. 'We found no suicide note. He did not show any sign of depression before the accident, and we found that he was alone on the rooftop.' Godignon, from the University of Technology at Troyes in northeastern France, was enrolled in City University's department of manufacturing engineering and engineering management. The university said it had contacted the French consulate and the student's family. Paule Ignatio, head of the French consulate's press and communication department, refused to say if the family had been contacted. 'We are sad and sorry to hear what happened,' she said. 'We have made inquires to the Hong Kong police already. We are closely following up the case.'
