Viewing facts the way they are

AS one of the ''unwanted advisers'' referred to by Kevin Sinclair (South China Morning Post, January 31) may I suggest that he would be more effective in his invective were he in possession of a few basic facts.

The boat people are not illegal immigrants, they are asylum seekers. Hong Kong's very own Legislative Council passed into law S.13A etc, of the Immigration Ordinance, which provides for asylum claims for Vietnamese. They are the only nationality which can make such a claim under Hong Kong law.

Perhaps Mr Sinclair would care to turn his rhetoric on Legco? This provision gave asylum seekers a legitimate expectation that their claims would be heard. This expectation has not been fulfilled, through bias and prejudice fuelled by such words as Mr Sinclair's.

The people who will suffer from this failure to observe the due process and the rules of natural justice are the very same Mr and Mrs Hong Kong who are presently paying for barbed wire, guards and forced removals now. You will hear their cries for justice in due course.

Legal advice laid on for boat people is sketchy and unprofessional.

The despised ''tub thumping'' is undertaken to attract attention to the damage Hong Kong is doing to itself. I am so glad you noticed, Mr Sinclair.
