MING Tsai, the haemophiliac boy expelled from school when the headmaster found out he had HIV, is now in serious condition in hospital, it was revealed yesterday.

Sister Maureen McGinley, spokesman for AIDS Concern, said it was impossible to tell how much longer Ming Tsai would survive but that it would probably be only one or two months.

''Ming Tsai is very weak. He's in hospital now and he's basically dying.'' She added that the 14-year-old boy was losing his sight and was becoming less aware of his surroundings.

''He used to get very upset over the way he was treated because he was HIV-positive, but now he's reached the stage of his illness where he's not so aware of that.

''He seems to be more at peace with himself.'' Ming Tsai gained headline coverage when he was ordered to leave his Sha Tin school in 1991 because he was found to be carrying HIV.

Late last year he was offered a place at a different school by the Education Department, but was too weak to attend.
