During a boring day in the office twentysomething journalist Meenakshi Reddy Madhavan began a personal blog that would push the boundaries of the permissible in India.
Indian women are not meant to talk about sex. 'Today we're going to talk about oral sex,' is a typically breezy start to the blogger's musings on the couplings, partying and vodka binges of a young woman in India.
And such considerations might include masturbation, orgasms and what it is about the male anatomy that turns women on.
Madhavan started the blog, titled The Compulsive Confessor, in New Delhi; she is now based in Mumbai. It has become a beacon of openness in the Indian blogosphere for its easy, candid and witty style.
Madhavan's explicit writing may not be outrageous by the standards of the west, but has proved a hit in India, where sex remains a taboo subject.
A former minister, Murli Manohar Joshi, recently denounced sex education as an evil that would 'corrupt' children and lead to an 'immoral society'.
