Meanwhile, in the other SAR ... Macau students are being urged to submit applications to act as volunteers during next year's Beijing Olympics and Paralympic Games. There will be about 70,000 volunteers at the Olympics and another 30,000 at the Paralympics. An advertising campaign was launched in Macau last week in an effort to encourage students to apply. Volunteers must hold a Macau SAR identity card, Macau passport or mainland travel permit in order to be eligible. They must be born on or before June 30, 1990, and be in good health. An Olympic spokesman said the majority of volunteers would be recruited from schools and colleges in Beijing, but that people were also being sought from Macau, Hong Kong and Taiwan. 'Volunteers are the real image ambassadors of Olympics, representing Olympic spirit,' he said. 'Games volunteers will be required to devote much of their time and energy but will not receive any material rewards for their hard work. When serving the Games, they will harvest a rare experience in life.' Veronica Ho, of Barra, has been waiting for the application process to open and said she was hopeful of being selected. The 17-year-old will be just old enough to qualify and said she was confident her English-speaking skills may give her an advantage. 'I would love to be in Beijing during the Olympics,' Veronica said. 'It would be an excellent experience and a great opportunity to meet people from around the world, be part of the buzz and see some events.' Applicants must be available for pre-Games training and be able to work at least seven consecutive days during the Games. Applications are open until the end of March.
