Inspired by a stint in university research, traditional Chinese medicine practitioner May Wong Mui-fong wants to help patients using the benefits of treatments from the east and west

A veteran Chinese medicine practitioner hopes to see a fusion of treatments that will one day close the rift between western and traditional Chinese medicine.

May Wong Mui-fong, a 20-year veteran of traditional Chinese medicine, was inspired to use her skills in collaboration with western medicine when she did research at Chinese University's Institute of Chinese Medicine in 2000.

Ms Wong described her former supervisor as an inspiration.

'Although he is a foreigner and a western practitioner, he is greatly fascinated by traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture. He suggested that the scientific methods long used in western medical research can also be applied in assessing the clinical value of Chinese medicine,' said Ms Wong, who is in her 40s.

During her three-year tenure as a research assistant, their team took a Chinese-western approach to allergies, depression and stroke. She found the research on post-natal depression the most memorable.
