City seniors' health care lacking
Nearly half of all elderly people in mainland cities live alone and have inadequate health care, Xinhua said, quoting a survey by the government-run China Elderly Work Committee Office. An estimated 49.7 per cent of city dwellers aged 60 or older lived in 'empty nests', Xinhua said. The survey found that the number of people aged 60 and older in late 2006 was 149 million, or 11.3 per cent of the population, imposing a growing welfare burden. AFP
