While most have waited anxiously at home for news of family members stranded on icy highways, a brave few have taken on the chilling cold and heavy snow by setting out on foot in search of their loved ones. Shenzhen worker Liu Zhongping finally found his father-in-law, mother-in-law and six-year-old son on a bus yesterday after walking for 30 hours along a 20km stretch of the Beijing-Zhuhai Highway. With a vacuum flask in hand and covered in a thick blanket, Mr Liu began his challenge on Sunday after learning that his family had been trapped for three days, and that their food and drink had run out. Mr Liu spent 20 yuan to fill his vacuum flask with hot water - a sum which would normally buy five or six meals, and set out. Adding to his worries was the fact that his 58-year-old father-in-law, Feng Bingting , suffered from hypoglycemia, the Nanfang Daily reported. Mr Feng and his wife had decided to take the boy to Shenzhen to see his parents for the first time since they left Hubei two years ago to work at an electronics factory. 'Last night, the weather was very cold, luckily he brought us blankets and quilt,' Mr Feng told the paper. His wife said Mr Feng had only eaten a small bowl of rice and salted radish in three days. Walking also seemed the natural choice for another Shenzhen worker, 24-year-old Du Dengyong . Mr Du lost contact with his girlfriend, Zhou Yonghong , after she was stranded in Zhuzhou , Hunan , while travelling on a long-distance bus from Shenzhen to her home in Jianli, Hunan. 'My clothes were frozen, and my hair was hardened like mousse,' Mr Du told the newspaper. But it did not deter him from walking more than 100km along the Beijing-Zhuhai highway. By the time he finally reached Chenzhou , however, his legs hurt so much and the ice was so thick that he had to stay at a hostel on Tuesday without getting in touch with his girlfriend. Nevertheless, one of Mr Du's friends confirmed yesterday that he had finally managed to contact his girlfriend. 'She's fine at the moment and is at her Hunan home. He's trying to meet her as soon as possible if traffic allows,' his friend said.
