HK sport heroes to lead way with Olympic torch

Hong Kong's sporting champions are expected to feature heavily among the 120 athletes and celebrities who will carry the Olympic torch through the city on May 2.

Olympic windsurfing gold medallist Lee Lai-shan, table tennis silver medallists Ko Lai-chak and Li Ching, cycling world champion Wong Kam-po and Asian Games badminton gold medallist Wang Chen are believed to be the leading names among the 42 athletes on the list.

Revealing the route for the torch relay, Pang Chung, honorary secretary general of the Hong Kong Olympic Committee, said the names would not be released until the end of next month.

The seven-hour relay will start at the Cultural Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui and end at Golden Bauhinia Square in Wan Chai. It will pass along Nathan Road, over the Tsing Ma Bridge, by the Olympic equestrian events venue in Sha Tin and Victoria Harbour, and through Central.

The torch will be carried for 200 to 250 metres by each bearer.

A dragon boat will carry the torch when it reaches the Shing Mun River in Sha Tin.

Yip Siu-hong, representative for Hong Kong in equestrian events at the 2008 Paralympic Games, has said he will ride his horse.
