Burma's national carrier said the service was in response to increased trade.

Trade between Singapore and Burma is said to have topped S$420 million (about HK$2 billion) in the first seven months of last year.

For the service, the line chartered a self-sustained container ship, the Integra, built in 1986.

Myanma will run the 326-TEU (20-foot equivalent unit) feeder ship on a 12-day frequency, accepting full-container load and less-than-container load shipments.

The line appointed Jardine Starline Management, a Jardine Matheson subsidiary, to act as the commercial manager for the service, a Jardine marketing representative said.

Jardine Shipping Agencies will serve as the local agent.
