Top teams face off in New Year Cup

Hong Kong take on clubs from Uruguay, Croatia and S Korea in cup competition

One of this year's most anticipated football events in Hong Kong, the Wing Lung Bank 2008 Lunar New Year Cup kicks off tomorrow at the Hong Kong Stadium.

Three leading international teams have been invited to compete with the Hong Kong League Selection Team in the tournament organised by the Hong Kong Football Association (HKFA). They are Penarol from Uruguay, Hajduk Split from Croatia and Ulsan Hyundai from South Korea.

HKFA chairman, Brian Leung Hung-tak, said: 'This year's competition is going to be an exciting event, with Hong Kong battling three overseas teams, all of which are champions of their respective national football leagues. Three continents are also going to be represented, making this competition truly international.'Penarol are one of the oldest football clubs in South America dating back 117 years.

Their record is impressive: they have won 36 Uruguayan league champion's titles and also clinched the Copa Libertadores three times. The top club teams from South America, including Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Peru, battle for honours in the Libertadores Cup.

Hajduk Split are equally strong. They have won 16 Croatian league championships and five of their players are members of the Croatian national squad.
