Recently, Spidey fans were stunned to find that Marvel had decided to undo 21 years of storyline by erasing Spider-Man's marriage with a four-part story arc titled One More Day.

Amazing Spider-Man #545, the touching fourth part, is brilliantly illustrated by current Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada, who also co-wrote the story with J. Michael Straczynski (creator and executive producer of Babylon 5).

A bit of background: during last year's Superhero Civil War, a bill was passed that required all superheroes to register their true identities and powers.

When Peter Parker/Spider-Man reveals his true identity, he and his family become targets for those with a grudge against the web-slinger.

The Kingpin, a long time adversary of Spidey, sends an assassin to kill him. But his bullet misses and hits Parker's Aunt May instead. When all medical, technological and even mystical avenues fail to save save her, Parker approaches the demon Mephisto.

To save his aunt, Parker must give up his marriage. Mephisto says that Parker's relationship with Mary Jane 'is the rarest love of all', a bond that is 'pure, unconditional and made holy in the eyes of he who I hate most. A love like yours comes about but once in millennia and to take that away ... is a victory like none other imaginable'.
