One could blame my recent penchant for country-western clothing on watching too many Westerns. It may be hard to imagine that a country girl's attire is exciting but there's something to be said about that rugged cowboy/cowgirl look that exudes a hearty and healthy image - quite a desirable change from the emaciated look that seems to pervade today's fashion. Plus, if it's good enough for Chanel, it's good enough for me.
To get this look, the first piece you need is something denim (not necessarily jeans). A denim dress, skirt, overalls and shirt are key pieces to this look. Although I know many will cringe, a denim shirt is the new must-have item to add to your wardrobe. Whether you go the vintage route or pick something new from brands such as Diesel, Levi's or Gas, make sure to get a piece that is not too dark and does not feature any embellishments.
Take a look at Earn (below right). Wearing a light denim shirt, a striped tee, khaki trousers with the cuffs rolled up and white Birkenstocks, he's got an urban cowboy look. Clean and precise lines make his outfit enviably cool. The rolled up hem is a nice touch to give the look a little bit of personal flavour.
Make sure you don't pair a denim shirt with denim jeans. Too much of a good thing is bad and, in this case, it's very very bad.
A denim dress or skirt might be an easier option for women who want to sample this trend. I saw a great denim tube dress at Zara that would look cute with a little white T-shirt underneath. Just make sure that the accoutrements to your denim piece are as slick and modern as you can get.
Another great country-western style option is gingham because it has a refreshing quality about it.
