How can we better protect our rivers and streams?
I refer to the letter from Cindy Choi Mo-ching, of the Association for Geoconservation (Talkback, February 5), on how we can better protect our streams and rivers.
In my view, the most prolific destroyer of the environment in and around rivers and streams is the Drainage Services Department.
Examples of its vandalism are evident throughout the New Territories.
The so-called 'work' being carried out on this department's behalf at the Ho Chung River in Sai Kung is a prime example.
Once upon a time, this waterway was known as the Black River due to the discharge of chemical waste from the dye factory situated on the river bank.
After plenty of campaigning, the factory was closed down and the river cleaned.
