Lingnan University plans to build a new residence complex to meet higher student enrolment as a result of the switch to four-year degrees in 2012.
President Chan Yuk-shee said the 20-storey building, to be built opposite the campus, would provide 600 places for students.
Professor Chan said this week the new complex would also provide classrooms, lecture halls, administration facilities and student amenities. 'Our target is to ultimately provide on-campus residence for all students throughout the whole period of their studies.'
The university said it secured the 50,700 sq ft site on Tuen Kwai Road near Fu Tai Estate from the Lands Department in the middle of last year.
Professor Chan said half of the HK$200 million cost of construction, which will start this year, would come from the government. The university would raise the rest.
He said he expected the number of full-time students to rise to 2,500 in 2012 from the current 2,300. The university has six student residential blocks providing 1,500 places.
