It's got a huge screen and hardly any buttons on the front, but it's not the 3G iPhone many people are waiting for.

While it's hard to avoid a direct comparison, SonyEricsson's upcoming XPERIA X1 smartphone is quite a different animal to Apple's offering.

At 17mm thick, it's not exactly svelte. But the XPERIA X1 does offer a full set of features, including a platform powered by the Windows Mobile operating system, a 3-inch wide VGA display, a 3.2-megapixel digital camera, and full 3G and HSDPA/HSUPA (high speed download and uplink) capabilities.

The most distinctive element of the X1 is its arc slider design. It hides a full qwerty keyboard under the main display, which slides out horizontally, like previous PDA phones from HTC and O2.

SonyEricsson has also introduced a new panel interface for the XPERIA, which allows users to place and customise nine large buttons on the 'home' screen of the phone. These 'panels' then allow you to view information and access different applications inside the XPERIA.

Obviously, the XPERIA will come with all the standard features of a Windows Mobile smartphone, including Office Mobile, Outlook and Internet Explorer, as well as the majority of basic phone applications like video call support, Java, Bluetooth, games and so on.
