Wong Wan-yiu virtually assured Hong Kong of another Olympic berth by springing a major surprise to win the women's 20-kilometre points race in the final leg of the World Cup Classic in Copenhagen.
The victory gave Wong a massive 300 world ranking points, which, coupled with the points won in Europe and Asia Tour events makes her almost certain to become the first SAR rider to qualify for a track event in Beijing.
Hong Kong coach Shen Jinkang praised the 21-year-old Wong, who only switched from road racing to track events in 2006. 'She has gone through some very tough training with the Hong Kong men's team, including riding with top cyclists like Wong Kam-po and Cheung King-wai,' said Shen. 'She gained immense experience by racing in 12 consecutive professional races in Italy and Australia in 2007.
'Even if she does not race in the world championships in Manchester next month, she still has sufficient points to qualify for the Olympics.'
Wong Kam-po, however, needs a good performance in England - his last chance to garner qualifying points - after a disappointing 18th place in Copenhagen.
