Pullman Bangkok King Power

What is it? I thought a Pullman was a railway carriage. So it was - and still is. The Pullman Bangkok King Power is run by the Accor Group, which is reviving the Pullman brand and its associations with the ease and luxury of days gone by.

So, are we talking old-world charm? Not at all. The hotel's design is stunningly contemporary, inside and out, contrasting with the surrounding area: the traditional Bangkok around the Victory Monument. The Pullman's 386 rooms and suites bulge with hi-tech gizmos, including interactive satellite TVs and free Wi-fi internet access. There's even an e-check-in page on the hotel website.

What about those of us who aren't so computer savvy? The Pullman emphasises the human side of things. The lobby swarms with staff tasked to do nothing but greet guests and answer their queries. It's an attitude that runs throughout the property, which, incidentally, features some arresting works by local artists.

What about the buffet car, so to speak? Cuisine Unplugged, the all-day dining restaurant, pretty much covers the world's cuisines. There's also an upmarket brasserie, Deja Vu, which serves the best of Asia, California and the Mediterranean, while gourmet Thai fare is showcased in @ Chaan. Bar Glen (above right), on the ground floor, is hip, and the WP wine pub spins to the sound of the DJ's vinyl. Guests on the executive floors can dive into complimentary cocktails and canapes in their exclusive lounge after 5pm.

And the sybaritic stuff? The hotel is owned by King Power, Thailand's duty-free conglomerate, so there's a massive shopping mall next door. The Skytrain leading to MBK Centre and other retail Valhallas is a complimentary tuk-tuk ride away. LeSpa has a plush treatment villa next to the outdoor pool. Indulgences include massages, scrubs and facials, or you could combine them in a 'ritual' lasting up to six hours.

What about the X factor? Executive-floor guests can make use of the King Power Lounge at Suvarnabhumi Airport before departure - a haven from the crowds.
