In its latest 8/F Platform experimental production, the Hong Kong Dance Company looks at how yang ge, one of the oldest forms of Chinese folk dance, has survived and evolved.
Choreographed by company dancers Chen Lei and Xie Yin (above), Feng Shui Xing is an exploration  of a dance form that has been influenced by  many dynasties, schools and regional idiosyncrasies  on the mainland. What  the company  performs in this piece
is a  mix of the traditional and the modern.  'The hardest part of this
work is probably trying to stick to all the traditional moves of yang ge
while presenting the dance in a contemporary way so it  appeals to today's audience,' says Chen.
'We're keeping and respecting the traditions in terms of movement, but  we're performing the dance with new music and costumes. We want to broaden people's perception of Chinese dance - to show that it's rich in history and character  but not dated or tacky.'
The performance will also feature  dancer Kong Lai-ming and a group of Chinese dance students from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Chen says: 'It's meaningful that local students are taking part in this production because the theme of Feng Shui Xing is also about yang ge being passed on to the next generation.
'None of the students have learned the traditional dance form on the mainland but I see that as an advantage.  How they interpret yang ge  will  add more to  the art.'
