Category: III (Cantonese)
Over-the-top violence, a complex, logic-defying plot, and some unexpectedly human moments are the chief components of Fatal Move, a picture reminiscent of the kind of large-scale gang epics that were once a staple of Hong Kong cinema.
Director-writer Dennis Law has assembled a large cast, many of whom made their names when the triad film was a major box office draw; it's hard not to just sit back and enjoy the ride.
But not too much: Fatal Move, after all, has a Category III rating, and it's not due to explicit sex. Limbs are severed and faces blown away, complete with computer-generated splatterings, as the gang battles internal and external foes. The linchpins are triad boss Lin Ho-lung (Sammo Hung) and his troublesome brother Ho-tung (Simon Yam), and their would-be nemesis is wise, bland Senior Inspector Liu (Danny Lee, of course).
