The public - and particularly expatriates and overseas visitors - have been warned not to give money to fake Buddhist monks begging for alms.
The warning comes amid suggestions that those involved in the scam are targeting foreigners after locals saw through the con.
The 'monks' with shaven heads, saffron robes and brass bowls are often seen in tourist spots and other busy areas.
One was seen at the weekend approaching several non-Chinese in a crowded part of Central while ignoring the many Chinese passers-by.
The Hong Kong Buddhist Association said yesterday genuine devotees were not allowed to beg in Hong Kong. 'People should not donate money to people just because they are dressed like monks and nuns,' the association's executive officer, Sugeng Utomo, said.
It was the first time he had heard of expatriates being targeted in the scam, he said.
