A top mainland lawmaker has called on new local deputies to the National People's Congress to make efforts to understand the operations of the state legislature.
Meeting all Hong Kong deputies in a closed-door session to discuss Premier Wen Jiabao's report on the work of the central government, NPC chairman Wu Bangguo yesterday expressed his three expectations of local delegates.
He urged new deputies to make more effort to learn the various aspects of the NPC's operations and their own duties.
'The whole NPC exercises its power and makes decisions through meetings. The basic thing about our operations is that we work collectively,' he said, according to Maria Tam Wai-chu, the Hong Kong delegation's deputy convenor.
The chairman also appealed for the deputies to contribute ideas for formulating policies for national development and to fully support the law-based governance of the special administrative region.
Li Changjiang, minister of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, and several officials were also at the meeting to discuss food safety and economic development.
