Fish and chip shop adds a battered treat to the earthly side of celebrating Easter
As we approach the festival of Easter, no doubt the religious among us are turning their thoughts to resurrection and renewal. For the less spiritually inclined, this important landmark in the Christian calendar is more likely to conjure up a culinary calling to eggs of the chocolate variety. Big, small, decorated, musical, even talking eggs pop up around town at this sacred time. However, we have discovered an eggy Easter treat which - if over indulged in - could be your Last Supper. We thought we'd seen it all when deep fried Mars Bars hit the streets of Central last year - but we hadn't.
The Chippy restaurant - the city's only traditional British-style fish and chip shop, in Wellington Street, Central - is battering and deep-frying Cadbury's Creme Eggs. The eggs are produced by Cadbury Schweppes and have a thick milk chocolate shell, with a white and yellow fondant filling designed to look like the yolk and albumen of an egg. That was where the resemblance with real eggs was meant to end - you weren't supposed to fry them, or so we thought. But Chippy owner Toby Cooper thinks out of the egg box and says his latest addition to the menu is no yolk.
'We've been deep-frying Mars Bars since we opened in April last year, which go down very well. I'd been looking to expand the range, then saw Cadbury's Creme Eggs and thought it would be a nice seasonal touch. OK, it's not the most healthy thing, but that's not what we do at the Chippy, it's more about comfort food and indulging once in a while,' he told Lodown, adding: 'We use a light, crispy, sweet version of the same batter we use on the fish.'
One of the creations with a couple of scoops of vanilla ice cream will set you back HK$45, and its two for HK$75. 'I've only just put them on the menu, so I'm not sure of the sales yet, but they are creating a lot of interest,' he said.
Go on! You know you want one.
