It might be March but Louis Vuitton has already staked a claim to party of the year with its effort for the new gigantic Canton Road store. A posh in-store cocktail party wasn't nearly enough promotional pomp for the label, so it also 'Vuittonised' a Star Ferry boat (running until this Wednesday) and asked Chow Yun-fat to indulge his photographic hobby with an exhibit inside the new shop. Furthermore, guests from the store opening - and numerous others deemed not worthy enough for the private cocktails - were shuttled from Kowloon and The Landmark in Central to a lavish over-the-top party in West Kowloon. Yes, it was an obscene night of extravagance in a huge hangar shaped like a classic labelled gold trunk. We're told it took workers 19 days to build. Big names flown in for the night included Michelle Yeoh Choo-kheng, Korean stars Choi Ji-woon and Lee Jun-ki, Zhang Ziyi, model Eva Herzigova and the company's chief executive, Yves Carcelle. All joined 2,000 others for a bash that included ballet dancers, parkour jumpers and a 20-minute set from rapper Kanye West (left). Some say this brief performance was a lot more energetic than his concert last year and the volume was appropriately cranked up. Some of the more posh attendees with a lesser appreciation for hip hop decided to call it a night. But they were in the minority. Everyone else smoked, drank and munched on Mandarin Oriental canapes. They also should have thanked all the label-chasing suckers who line up each day to buy Louis Vuitton stuff for affording them this decadence.
