Record number of candidates may split support
Pan-democrat allies are facing tough competition in Legislative Council elections because the three main political parties plan to field a record number of candidates.
With the ballot just six months away, the Democratic Party is expected to endorse as many as 11 candidates later this month to stand in the five geographical constituencies.
The Civic Party is considering five to six tickets, while the League of Social Democrats may put up three to five. Another three tickets will be sponsored by the Association for Democracy and People's Livelihood.
Independent heavyweight Anson Chan Fang On-sang is also expected to seek re-election on Hong Kong Island, sources in her camp say.
While the number of Legco seats remains unchanged at 30, the government's decision to switch one seat from Kowloon East to Kowloon West has prompted parties to review electoral strategies.
