A perfect score
There are always winning performances in Olympic gymnastics, but how often are those 'perfect' performances? Olympic judges, like teachers, do not really like giving full marks. But this was not the case with Romania's Nadia Comaneci at the Montreal Olympics.
In 1976, 14-year-old Comaneci did the impossible when she became the first gymnast in Olympic history to be given a perfect mark of 10 for her performance. During the Montreal Games, Comaneci achieved maximum marks seven times. The scoreboards at the Games were not even equipped to display scores of 10.0 - so Comaneci's perfect marks were shown on the display as 1.00 instead. In the 1976 and 1980 Olympics, Comaneci won a grand total of nine gold medals. She retired from competitive gymnastics in 1981.
