The wonders of modern simulcasting paved the way for Almond Lee Yee-tat's exciting new acquisition, Nightlign, to keep his unbeaten record intact with a winning Hong Kong debut in the final event yesterday. Nightlign (Alex Lai Hoi-wing) was a winner at all three of his two-year-old starts in New Zealand, coming from midfield in his races even at 1,400 metres, and that was the original plan yesterday when trainer Lee issued his instructions for the Butterfly Handicap (1,200m). Attending the Magic Millions yearling sales on Australia's Gold Coast yesterday, Lee was able to see telecasts of the events and realised that on-pace runners were finding themselves advantaged in the earlier races. 'I was lucky I was able to see the races and, if we had ridden Nightlign back as planned, he would have had no chance of winning,' a delighted Lee said later. 'About 30 minutes before the race, I was able to call through to my staff and change the instructions. I asked that Alex ride the horse close to the speed and to try to get the rail. He did and it was the difference.' Lai had Nightlign quickly into second behind Natural Blitz in the run to the home turn where the youngster showed a great turn of foot to put the race away quickly from the top of the straight, defeating another promising youngster in Able Too. As promising as Nightlign had appeared to be in his juvenile career, assistant trainer Talley Chan Che-chung admitted some surprise at the win and especially the impressive style of the victory. 'Yes, he looked a nice young horse for later, but he had not done that much work for his first start,' Chan said. 'Also, the race looked a very strong one, so I'm a little surprised he performed so well, but it's very encouraging for his future.' It was a complete contrast for Lo Chuen-hang as he collected a HK$600,000 bonus cheque from the Jockey Club as the owner of a Private Purchase horse winning in Class One in his first season. His other horse, Full Of Joy, only recently opened his account after racing here for over a year.
