PARENTS have been warned to watch out for signs of stress or over-excitement in their children when they play video games, because they could be the first signs of a seizure.

The head of the paediatric ward at the Queen Mary Hospital, Professor Yeung Chap-yung, said five per cent of children under the age of seven could be prone to seizures, and that parents may not always be aware of the dangers associated with the games.

Professor Yeung explained that the video exposed the eye to constant visual stimulation, or ''blinding flashes'', which could also bring on an attack in epilepsy sufferers.

The Consumer Council has advised parents to make sure children do not play for longer than an hour at a time.

The council also advised parents to make sure their child did not sit too close to the screen.
