Dragonair is still unsure why one of its planes flying from Beijing to Hong Kong caught fire, forcing it to return to the capital on Sunday.

Flight KA991 departed Beijing Capital International Airport at 1.47pm with 291 passengers and 13 crew. An hour later, smoke entered the cabin of the Airbus A330 and the oxygen masks dropped out.

Hong Kong's Civil Aviation Department has ordered Dragonair to submit a report on the incident.

'The plane landed [in Beijing] at 15.06 without incident,' a spokeswoman for the airline said yesterday, stressing that an emergency landing had not been required. Ambulance attendants and firefighters were deployed as a precaution.

She said the company was still investigating and could not yet say what happened.

'The plane is still at the Beijing airport and our staff members are investigating. It will only resume service after a thorough inspection and repairs,' she said.

One of the passengers, named So, said: 'I heard a thudding rumble sound, then came the thick smoke. Oxygen masks fell down afterwards.'
