THE problem of stray dogs in Hong Kong has got worse, as was reported on the television programme Inside Story on Monday evening.

The Agriculture and Fisheries Department officials denied such problems existed and did not want to stop the import of animals because they said ''Hong Kong was a free-trade port''.

In order to get here, these animals have to go through a gruesome and horrific journey. Once in Hong Kong people treat their dogs (especially) as prestige objects such as a Mercedes Benz or a mobile phone, and keep them in tiny apartments. They soon become a nuisance to the owners and after a while are abandoned.

Why is there still no law against dogs and cats being on display and for sale in these disgusting pet-shops? In Europe one can only get an animal through the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or a breeder.

It is about time Hong Kong did the same and really started caring for our four-legged friends.
