Pupils hurt as bus driver slams on brakes to avoid car

Seven pupils from Heep Yunn Primary School suffered minor injuries when their bus braked heavily to avoid a car on Clear Water Bay Road, Choi Hung, at about 7.30am yesterday. The driver did not call police and continued on to the school, which then sent seven girls aged seven to 10 to Queen Elizabeth Hospital. The school sacked the bus company because it was the second such incident. In a separate case, two boys aged 13 and 14 were admitted to hospital after being hit by a taxi in Tin Kwong Road, Hung Hom, at 4.35pm.

Evicted rooftop dwellers threaten to set shop ablaze

Three people who poured thinners on the floor of a vacant shop and threatened to set it alight were persuaded by police to give up after a 41/2-hour standoff. The drama began when the three, former rooftop dwellers recently evicted from the Un Chau Street building, returned to collect their belongings at about 10.30am. The two men and a woman pushed two security guards out of the shop and locked the gate while a family of three was also inside. The family managed to slip out a back door while police negotiated with the others.

Depressed mother kills herself

A 47-year-old accountant suffering depression and worried about her children's academic performance committed suicide in her Wan Chai home. She was found unconscious at 7.30am and declared dead at Eastern Hospital 21 minutes later. In a separate case, a 41-year-old man survived a suicide leap from a footbridge in Lung Cheung Road, Wong Tai Sin, at 3.30pm.
