23-year-old surrenders to police after two hurt in bus-stop crash
A man surrendered to police yesterday about eight hours after a car crashed into a bus stop, badly injuring two people in San Po Kong.  The driver of the car leapt from the vehicle and fled as a woman lay trapped and seriously injured under it.
A 23-year-old man who surrendered to Kowloon East traffic unit police at Ngau Tau Kok  police station at about 4pm was arrested for dangerous driving, leaving the scene of an accident and drink-driving, after he failed a breathalyser test.
The man, surnamed Lam, was later released on HK$10,000 bail and ordered to report back to police on October 31.
Initial investigations showed that he was not the car owner.
A Honda Accord was travelling towards Mong Kok on Choi Hung Road when the accident happened at about 6.40am. The driver lost control of the vehicle near the junction with Ning Yuen Street  and crashed into a central divider.
'There was a loud bang when the car slammed into the central divider. It then spun in a half circle and skidded as smoke came from its tyres,' a male passer-by said.
Police said the car skidded for about 30 metres and mounted the pavement. 'It crashed into a bus stop where a number of people were waiting for a bus,' acting Superintendent Ho Chak-kan said.
He said the car struck two pedestrians - a man, 64, and woman, 46.  The woman was trapped beneath the car and had to be freed by firemen.
The driver jumped out of the car and fled on foot, watched by several witnesses. 'He dashed on to Choi Hung Road and climbed over the central divider to cross the road,' an elderly man said.
People  gave chase but lost him.
Police investigations later revealed the fugitive  had taken a taxi to Tsim Sha Tsui.
The two injured pedestrians were taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where the woman  was in serious condition last night and the elderly man was  stable.
The car was towed to a government vehicle plant in Ho Man Tin  to undergo tests for mechanical faults.
Officers from Kowloon East traffic unit are investigating the case. Anyone with information can contact police on 23057500.
Between December 19 last year and January 9, there were four hit-and-run cases in which two people died and five people were injured.
Police figures show 31 people were killed in 30 traffic accidents in the first two months of this year. Twenty-seven people died in 24 accidents in the same period last year.
