AN alleged car thief turned the tables on his accusers yesterday when he testified that police officers had smashed a window of a Mercedes-Benz and framed him for their crime.
Cheung Nga-kok, 28, told the District Court that on February 6 last year, he had been in a car park in Mei Foo Sun Chuen, Kowloon, waiting for a friend when a group of policemen asked him what he was doing.
Judge Jackson heard that seven or eight police officers assaulted Cheung after he denied accusations that he was there to steal.
Cheung claimed that the officers smashed the window using a fire extinguisher, shoved him inside and told him to start the engine using a screwdriver.
He said when he was unable to do so, police dragged him from the car, beat him again and demanded he confess to breaking into the car.
The police officers deny the allegations.
Cheung has pleaded not guilty to taking a conveyance without authority, going equipped for stealing and resisting arrest.
