A trip to Zhuhai is often in the 'too-hard basket' for Hong Kong furniture shoppers, says Donna Shepherd. 'It is overwhelming trying to navigate the 700-plus warehouses.' As a result, Shepherd created Antiques Zhuhai + Beyond (AZ+B) and dedicated a year to learning about the market and hiring locals to liaise with vendors, suppliers and her clients, who are mainly English speakers from Hong Kong. Her company offers full-day, personalised shopping tours for groups. Typically, a trip begins at the Zhuhai ferry pier, where you are greeted by a guide and whisked off in an air-conditioned van. A route is designed around customer preferences, light refreshments are provided throughout the day and lunch at a restaurant is included. Once you have chosen your goods, AZ+B will take care of the ordering and delivery arrangements. Saving 50 per cent to 70 per cent off the price of the same goods in Hong Kong should more than make up for the HK$580 per head fee for the tour. Antiques Zhuhai + Beyond is at 20/F, Central Tower, 28 Queen's Road Central, tel: 9744 0558; www.antiqueszhuhai.com .
