Phantom Planet
Raise the Dead
(Fueled by Ramen)
With drummer Jason Schwartzman deciding his future lay in the film world, Phantom Planet took a four-year break from recording as they searched for a new sound.
There's no mistaking they've found it either. And you get it, both barrels, as lead singer/songwriter Alex Greenweld  (left) lets rip on the title track that opens up their latest release.
Gone are the days of breezy California-style, sun-soaked pop and it's obvious Greenweld has had a little Radiohead on his playlist too and he screeches and wails away.
The boys have gone heavy - and dark - and for the most part it's a tight fit. Greenweld has said he wanted to focus on the likes of Charles Manson and other LA cult crazies but the surprise is that the album is not all doom and gloom.
Do the Panic, for instance, finds the band working at their best, the new-found harder edge mixing with their previous pop leanings as guitar and piano combine seamlessly.
But there the excitement ends. Too intent, maybe, on turning up the volume, Phantom Planet seem unsure of where to go. And as the album draws to its ending, Raise the Dead descends into a wall of noise.
