Varty gets Penguins call

Budding lawyer Rowan Varty will take up the Penguin brief in June.

Varty, who on Friday night was named Hong Kong's Player of theYear, has been invited to represent the world-famous Penguins - recognised as the premier touring club in the UK - at the Rome Sevens on June 6-7.

'This is just awesome. It is more a recognition of Hong Kong rugby than me. And to play for a club which has seen the likes of [Waisale] Serevi, is just fantastic,' said Varty who turned out at fullback for Hong Kong 15s yesterday. 'I'll be playing with some world-class players.'

Although Hong Kong didn't win any silverware at this year's Hong Kong Sevens, an impressed Penguins director of rugby Craig Brown had seen enough and asked his local counterpart Rodney McIntosh for a player to wear the famous yellow, white and black strip in Rome.

'Roddy [McIntosh] picked me. I'm so excited. June is quite a long way off and I can't wait for by then I will have finished all my studies and exams at last,' said Varty who will become the first Hong Kong player to represent the Penguins.

Varty, 22, is doing the final hard yards in a law degree and will be sitting for his final qualifications in May. After that he will have to do two years of articles before becoming a fully-fledged lawyer. 'The honour of playing for the Penguins should be shared with all the Sevens guys,' Varty added.
