There's a Who's Who of classical performers in this years' The Number One Classical Album 2008, a two-CD compilation set that features some of today's best artists. The compilation is choc-a-bloc with great pieces and performances, from old favourites like Luciano Pavarotti's rendition of Nessun Dorma to the theme from the movie The Kite Runner. A special treat on the first CD is Sting's Flow My Tears, a mellow renaissance-style ballad with Sting on the mandolin. How very George Harrison. But being the great talent he is, Sting gives an amazing performance and proves his musicianship. Another standout is The Prayer (from the animated movie Quest for Camelot) performed by RyanDan, a Canadian duo of identical twin brothers. Their cover is a mixture of the English and Italian versions and they give a passionate performance. The brothers sing in different octaves, creating an amazing counterpoint. There are 35 amazing tracks on these two CDs. The music is a clever mixture of old and new classics. If you are tired of synth machines and cookie cutter pop idols, this is a collection that proves there are still singers and musicians out there with actual talent.
