You wouldn't normally associate a low-rent conceptual artist like Movana Chen Li-yun with a high-end fashion house like Shanghai Tang, but the two are collaborating for an art performance outside the retailer's Pedder Street shop today. At 1pm, Chen will don one of her unique 'body containers' - a wearable body sculpture knitted together from shredded pages of glossy magazines, in this case Shanghai Tang catalogues - and parade around in front of the store. The performance is being done as a prelude for Art HK 08, the big international art fair coming up next month. 'Shanghai Tang commissioned me,' Chen said. 'They wanted to collaborate with an artist and do a performance, so I used their catalogues to knit one of my body containers. It took me a whole month, and I just finished knitting it yesterday morning.' In total, she used 427 catalogue pages, cut into linguine-sized threads and knitted into a full body suit covering head and all. 'I've never done a performance like this on the street before. People won't be able to see my face but I'll be walking around during the lunch hour. You can tell it's Shanghai Tang from all the pinks and tones. Normally, my suits are very brown, black and dark.' Chen's Shanghai Tang body container will then be on display at the Pedder Street shop until the art fair. No, she didn't add a Mandarin collar or cut it into a cheongsam fit.
