Final statements heard in corruption trial
The graft trial of four relatives of former public works minister Ao Man-long and three businessmen heard final statements from the prosecution and defence lawyers on Monday and Tuesday. The prosecution asked the court to confiscate any unjustified wealth owned by Ao's wife, Chan Meng-ieng. Ao Chan Wa-choi, his sister-in-law, apologised for 'unwittingly breaking the law' after being 'misled' by Ao. The court has yet to fix a date for the verdict in the trial that began in January.
Licensed vehicles up 6 per cent
The number of licensed motor vehicles rose 6 per cent year on year to 177,532 at the end of last month, according to the latest government statistics. The number of motorcycles grew 7 per cent to 93,166 and the number of private cars rose 5.3 per cent to 72,014. There are fewer than 40,000 parking spaces for motorcycles. Land traffic between Macau and the mainland surged 11 per cent to 977,511 vehicle trips in the first quarter.
Teachers' subsidies to rise
Private school teachers will see their average government subsidies rise 60 per cent in September, according to an issue of the Government Gazette published on Monday. A private school teacher with a bachelor's degree and recognised training in teaching will see his or her monthly government subsidy raised to 4,000 patacas from 2,500 patacas.
