Plastics expert sought

A potential leader with hands-on experience in the plastics manufacturing business is sought for a key role with a company that boasts annual sales of more than US$7.4 billion and has 22,000 employees in over 110 plants in 20 countries.

Rexam Plastic Packaging (HKG), a subsidiary of Rexam PLC, one of the world's top three manufacturers of rigid plastic packaging and the global leader in beverage can manufacturing, is inviting applicants for the role of deputy plant manager, based in Shenzhen.

Rexam's mainland plastics business employs more than 5,000 people, with plants in Shanghai, Shenzhen and Tianjin, manufacturing packaging for the health care, closures and personal care markets.

'The deputy plant manager in the Shenzhen plastics packaging operation will manage a production plant and have responsibilities that include planning and directing all local production activities, as well as managing the plant's local engineering and supply chain,' said Simon Jennings, managing director of beverage packaging and Asia-Pacific administration.

Both the human resources and quality control teams will report to the successful candidate, according to Petrus Ching, the HR director of Rexam Plastic.

'It goes without saying that achieving operational effectiveness and high levels of customer satisfaction are important for the plant and Rexam as a whole, which is why this is a key role,' Mr Ching said. Long-term prospects are good, as Rexam is committed to training and developing its people so that they can make a valuable contribution to its future development.

'We plan to grow profitably across Asia and we envisage that the number of plants in the region will increase through targeted investment in new equipment and product and acquisitions,' Mr Jennings said.

The ideal applicant would have a university degree in engineering and at least five years of hands-on experience in international manufacturing companies, while experience in the plastic production and the consumer packaging industry would be preferred.

He or she will need to be able to act independently and have a strong sense of responsibility and accountability.

However, as the role is factory based, not much travel is needed.

'The most challenging parts of this role are to deliver operation objectives on time and with the best quality,' Mr Jennings said.

'To fulfil these, the successful candidate should be a team player with strong leadership; he or she should also be a good people manager,' Mr Ching added.

As training and people development is the basic philosophy of Rexam, all employees will receive appropriate training in order to support the business's development needs.

'As such, high-potential employees will join a group-wide talent pool to enable their further development,' Mr Ching said.
