Hong Kong and mainland students can now discover what studying at the University of New South Wales in Sydney would be like by logging onto YouTube.

The university is the first in Australia and only the third in the world to launch an official channel on the popular video-sharing website.

'A prospective student sitting in Hong Kong or China can get an idea what the campus is like, with video clips featuring students to show different aspects of their experience,' executive producer Mary O'Malley said.

'Students can learn a lot more viewing these student-perspective videos; they can meet prospective teachers and researchers in a way they can't from a text on a university website, where they don't get a sense of what the person who will be teaching them or supervising their research is like.'

Ms O'Malley said the YouTube channel was a precursor to a high-resolution online channel, UNSWTV, to be launched next semester, offering academics, staff and students 'a complete solution to the management of digital material'.

'The way people operate in the Web world is that they come to information by different means and one primary way in the visual medium is YouTube.'
