Songs of mourning filled the air at the Sai Kung roundabout as some 200 mourners took part in ceremonies yesterday to pray for the 18 victims of Thursday's bus crash.

The mourners - family and friends of victims and spiritual leaders of the Shinji Shumeikai religious group - lit joss sticks and placed fruit, flowers, paper money and rice at the scene of the crash. Many wept as songs of mourning were sung in Japanese and Chinese.

The victims were all members of Shinji Shumeikai who were on their way from Wong Tai Sin to the group's headquarters in Sai Kung.

Some family members said they were glad that their loved ones 'died when they were asleep ... so [they] did not realise what was happening'.

Survivors said many of the passengers on the bus were asleep when the crash happened.

Some relatives went to the Fu Shan Public Mortuary before attending the roadside ceremonies.
