Women have the power to get a better leader

If democracy is the best form of government, why is the United States in such a mess? After all, it has had more than 230 years of experience, and yet the US has lost the respect of many decent people around the world.

The problem seems to lie not with democracy itself, but with the failure of American voters, especially women, the majority of eligible voters. Why do they elect politicians who vitiate democratic and ethical values? Too many women voted for George W. Bush, probably the worst president in many decades.

This president is closely tied to the US military, but women should be shocked by the damage US militarism has done to American life and values. Women are bearers and nurturers of life, so they should have an instinctive repugnance for an institution increasingly committed to techno-killing. The bloated Pentagon budget is a tool of aggressive macho culture that American women should despise.

Another blatant failure is American wastefulness, pollution and consumerism causing worldwide ecological damage. The chief promoters of consumerism and reckless mortgage lending are all US financial and corporate executives, who support the Republican Party which has led the nation into its present morass. Concerned voters need to reject politicians who support bloated military budgets and useless spending.

Democracy can only succeed when it embodies the moral values of all the nation's people. For too long, American voters have embraced warped masculine images and impulses despite decades of female emancipation. In November, some women will vote for Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton if she gets the Democratic Party nomination. But whoever the winner is, let's hope they are not a George W. Bush clone.

Didn't somebody once say, 'People get the rulers they deserve'?
