A former senior official in Jilin  was detained last week by Beijing's top anti-graft watchdog for alleged corruption, prompting fears among officials of a possible political earthquake in the rust-belt province.
Mi Fengjun, a former vice-chairman of Jilin's provincial people's congress, was caught in bed with two prostitutes at a hotel in the provincial capital Changchun, according to mainland sources.
'He was caught by investigators from the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection early last week,' the sources said.
Investigators took him to Beijing for questioning.
The local government held an emergency briefing for provincial-level cadres on Sunday, the sources said.
The meeting was chaired by executive vice-governor Zhu Yanfeng because party boss Wang Min   and governor Han Changfu were visiting Shanghai.
Mr Mi, 65, is a native of Changchun, where he served as mayor and party secretary for more than a decade throughout the 1990s.
He was a member of the provincial party committee's standing committee between 1995 and 2002 and became a vice-chairman of the provincial legislature in 2003.
He retired from the post in January but is still a deputy to the National People's Congress.
Although he has not been charged, rumours about his fall from grace have been rife among  government cadres. Details of his actions, however, were unclear.
Local government and people's congress officials were not available for comment yesterday.
Analysts said the fact that he had been taken away by the party's top disciplinary body indicated the seriousness of the case.
More people may be implicated in the province.
Jilin has long been considered the economic backwater of the northeastern region and has been plagued by corruption, massive unemployment from  many bankrupt state-owned factories and social woes.
Early this year, a vice-mayor  of Jilin city  was sacked and expelled from the party for keeping mistresses and taking several million yuan in bribes.
At least four Jilin Higher People's Court judges were investigated last year by the Supreme People's Court for their possible connections with a Liaoyuan  triad boss and their role in reducing his jail sentence from 20 years to five.
Last week Beijing renewed its vows to root out widespread official corruption.
