Stress, a heavy workload, too much partying and too little sleep - a hectic lifestyle can play havoc with your skin, especially in the eye area. Here's how to perk up those peepers.

Puffy eyes

Volume is meant for your hair - not for under the eyes. Puffiness and mild swelling can make you look like you spent the night crying. There are many causes, the main culprit being water retention caused by too much salt in the diet, especially if you eat a lot of fast food. Dehydration causes the body to retain fluid, including on the face. Smoking also exacerbates the appearance of eye bags. Allergies to dust mites, pollution and even perfume can also cause puffy eyes.

There are a number of massage and facial lymphatic drainage treatments that can help to reduce the swelling and unpleasant puffiness caused by water retention. Davia Chiu, manager of the recently opened branch of Sense of Touch in Lan Kwai Fong, recommends the 30-minute Aromatherapy Associates treatment (HK$480). 'The treatment contains evening primrose and rosehip oil which helps to stimulate collagen production. Clients experience instant calming results,' says Chiu. The salon does this after a facial for the best overall effect.

For a similar effect at home, apply thin slices of cucumber straight from the fridge. This can temporarily reduce eye bag volume. Another trick is to use squeezed-out cold teabags. Drink plenty of water to rehydrate then lie down with your eyes closed and wait for the volume to subside.

Justine Grier, manager at The Beautiful Skin Centre in Pacific Place, recommends lymphatic massage. 'This has a direct and dramatic effect on draining the face. The complexion and especially the eye area become refreshed and clearer,' she says.

Grier also says not to apply eye cream too close to the eye duct. 'Otherwise the eye will flush it, especially during the night as the body rightfully considers it to be a foreign object. This is why, despite applying eye gels and creams at bedtime, the puffiness is often still present in the morning when it should have reduced. Instead, focus on the bone area where eye cream can help you to fight smile lines.' And remember to apply eye cream in an upward and anti-clockwise direction. This prevents dragging, which can exacerbate fine lines.
