Customers at the Kwun Tong branch of HSBC were told yesterday to wait one or two days before taking action over the loss of data in a computer server that went missing during renovation last month.
Staff members at the branch suggested that customers check their bank accounts regularly, beware of possible deception by bogus employees, and call the bank's public relations department or police if anything suspicious happened.
One customer, giving her name only as Ms Wong, said staff told her 'to wait one or two more days to take any further action'.
Ms Wong said she still had confidence in the bank's ability to handle the affair. 'But if more scandals come out in the coming few days, I may consider withdrawing all my savings from HSBC.'
Another client, giving only his surname as Chan, said he had been told by a staff member that the bank had multiple security systems to protect clients' data, but he was not satisfied with the reply. 'How come a big company like HSBC can make such a careless mistake?' he asked angrily as he left the branch.
The bank said copies of data were stored in its central computer system, and customer services would not be affected.
