FORMER Hong Kong Olympian Weng Tak-fung thrust and parried his way to the men's sabre title at the Hong Kong Open Championships yesterday - and showed he had not lost his razor sharpness despite dropping out of full-time training for months.
The slim, left-handed Weng, who represented the territory at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and the Beijing Asian Games four years ago, concentrates more on his private handbag business these days.
Still, the bespectacled fencer showed he was a cut above the rest, beating up-and-coming Alex Tang 15-13 in a hard-fought final at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium.
''I only practice maybe twice a month nowadays, nothing serious,'' said Weng, who still has the talent to match the territory's best.
''I think it's my experience which carried me through. I don't train that much but I've been in the game for over 10 years and I know a thing or two about competing.'' Weng, who only took part in the sabre even though foil is his main weapon, had to work hard for his victory against Tang who staged a brief comeback from 11-7 down to 13-12 before Weng's class showed in the end.
The more aggressive Weng attacked from the outset and remained cool under pressure to win the title.
