Why you can trust SCMP

If a mini-system or a boombox is too big and intrusive or if you're a radio fan, a small, classic tabletop radio may be the best solution. Their ability to fit into tight spots is perfect for Hong Kong's small apartments. The variety of styles and colours also makes it easy to match them with any decor.

Leading the way is the Denon S-52 tabletop, which weighs 6.7kg, but within its grey exterior are features that make its heft worthwhile. It includes an iPod dock, wireless network streaming capabilities, has a DAB (digital audio broadcasting) radio tuner, a clock with two alarms (one to wake you up; the other to remind you to listen to your favourite radio programme), a CD player (that can read and play data CDs), FM/AM radio and a USB port.

The built-in speakers produce a fairly good sound for their size and if the music needs beefing up, there's the Audyssey Dynamic EQ, which provides a powerful bass response and dynamic spatial audio reproduction. This 20-watt speaker system is complemented by a mono output that lets you add an optional powered subwoofer.

On the front you'll find the display, CD loading slot, auxiliary in, a headphone jack and the USB port.

The S-52 requires a connection to your home network. The unit will search for an available network and after you enter a code, you can begin searching and streaming radio stations from around the world. No PC is required for this.

There's a door on the top of the S-52 that hides an iPod dock. You can control the iPod with the S-52 remote or directly from the iPod. However, if you have hundreds of artists on your iPod, be prepared to spend some time scrolling as there isn't a way to skip ahead in your library (the equivalent of spinning the click wheel faster on your iPod). Unfortunately, there is no video out on the rear of the device, so playing any videos from your iPod isn't an option. But the S-52 will charge your iPod when it's plugged in.
