Effervescent Alyson Hau, DJ for Radio 2 and 3 at RTHK, has a gladiatorial attitude towards the subject of work - the more the better, bring it on. Hau, 24, works on Teen Time on English-language Radio 3, plus the weekend chart show, and then does the breakfast show for Radio 2 throughout the week. That hardworking attitude, she says, comes from her mother Tina, who singlehandedly raised two daughters after her father left the family when Hau was seven years old. 'My sister is eight years older than me. My mother had to work very hard and sometimes had to travel. One evening my sister was looking after me and I was determined to stay awake until my mum came back. In the end I picked up a wedding photo and took it to bed and when my mum came home she found me asleep hugging her photo. After that she changed her work so that she didn't need to travel any more.' Hau says her mother 'is the strongest woman I know. She always taught us to depend on ourselves ... she feels that it is important to be very strong in ourselves'.
